Jihadism is a western neologism used to refer to the most violent and radical branches within political Islam, characterized by frequent and brutal use of terrorism in the name of jihad, alleged to which his followers call a "holy war" the name of Allah. the basic concept of jihad as Islam is a debated issue. It has two types of meanings: the "lesser jihad" of violent inspiration, which is trying to legitimize the jihadists, and the greater jihad, spiritual interpretation, which represents the effort that every believer must make to be better Muslim, a better father or mother, spouse or person.

There are other meanings as Islamic terrorism or Islamic terrorism, often used in the media from the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, although its use is criticized for its links by association of Islam with terrorism. It is preferential use by theorists, scholars and politicians, the term "jihadist terrorism" to the detriment of other denominations, which in his opinion are widely counter to reinforce the point of view of the jihadists and their supporters, who argue that Western societies are naturally hostile to Islam.
