Disputed annually from June to May, the competition was created in the 1955-1956 season under the title of European Champions Club Cup (original name in French, Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens), with a single elimination format. In 1992 the tournament was restructured including the first league competition format in the quarterfinal stage, being renamed to its current name in the 1992/93 edition. Originally they classified teams to contest national league champions. In 1997 they began to also participate runners-up in 1999 and classified to fourth, depending on the UEFA coefficient of each league. The winner of this competition dispute the European Super Cup and, as a representative of the confederation, the FIFA Club World Cup. Reigning champion is FC Barcelona, who won his fifth title after beating Juventus Football Club.1 Real Madrid Football Club is the most successful of the competition with ten titles club. Since the tournament changed its name and structure, no club has managed consecutive wins.
